Your five-point Charging Checklist – EV charging for businesses and communities
3 min read
Are you wondering whether Electric Vehicle charge points would be a useful addition for your business or community space? Perhaps your customers or visitors have been asking when you’re getting EV charge points and you’re thinking through the options?
And then there's the question of whether it's better to fund and operate charge points yourself, or work with a trusted partner who can bring finance and remove all the hassle of owning and operating public facing charging infrastructure.
We’re here to help.
To begin with, here are five things to consider before putting the wheels in motion.
1. Location, location, location
Whereabouts are you? Are you near a motorway, a busy trunk road, or a town centre? If you’re considering a funder operated hub, larger Charge Point Operators are often focused on the ‘perfect’ location – one that has a large footfall and naturally attracts a greater number of visitors. Whilst it’s beneficial for drivers not to have to head miles off the beaten track to charge, the traditional ‘perfect’ location is less important to us. Our focus is on making people aware of alternative charging destinations. We want to help drivers plan their journey accordingly, so if you own a great pub that’s several miles from a motorway junction for instance, we’d love to look at the possibility of EV charge points and share your destination with drivers looking to charge.
2. A question of ownership
When you’re thinking about getting EV charge points installed, the question of who owns the land is critical. If it isn’t you, make sure you know who you, or your installation partner, needs to have a conversation with. That way the decision can be made quickly and efficiently. Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that when the charge points are funded it’s on a long-term lease arrangement.
3. Revenue and risk
What’s important to you? Is it to fund and operate EV charge points yourself, taking all the revenue but also the risk if they’re not used frequently? Or, are you interested in having charge points installed with no capital outlay? In this scenario, a funder, like us, would receive the revenue but also take on the risk. You would still be able to generate income in this scenario, through a guaranteed minimum annual payment for the duration of the lease term.
4. Driving increased visitors
Are you looking for a way to increase visitor dwell time to your business or public facing space? Would you like to attract a greater number of people to your site? Whatever the funding and operation arrangements, EV charging certainly has the potential to achieve this. If people decide to visit you because you have EV charge points , or spend longer with you because their EV is charging, it’s a win for you and for your visitors.
5. Going green, publicly
Would you like to showcase your green credentials? Is this something that’s important for you and your business? Installing EV charge points is a great way to contribute to your own sustainability strategy, showing your customers that you’re taking steps to mitigate climate change, whilst being able to meet their needs now and in the future.
