Net zero for your business

Many businesses are on the road to net zero. You might have heard that even Formula 1 is on track to achieve its target of becoming net zero by 2030, having delivered a 26% reduction in its carbon emissions by the end of 2024, compared to its 2018 baseline!

The NHS’s national ambition is to become the world’s first net zero health system, and in London Gatwick’s bid to be net-zero by 2030, the airport is in the process of transitioning to an all-electric vehicle fleet, alongside installing EV charging infrastructure.

EVCP solutions is here to support businesses across the South West, and beyond, to achieve net zero ambitions, as you transition your fleet to electric, or offer EV charging to your customers. Here, we set out how we can support you, what it all means, and why it’s necessary.

What is net zero?

Put simply, net zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas that's produced and the amount that's removed from the atmosphere. When what we add is no more than the amount we take away, we reach net zero.

Why is it necessary?

Climate science shows that to stabilise the change in climate, CO2 emissions need to fall to zero. The longer it takes, the more the climate will change.

To meet the Paris Agreement goal to limit average global temperature rises to 1.5°C, global carbon emissions should reach net zero around mid-century. For developing nations, that can mean the 2050s/2060s. For developed nations like the UK, it means 2050 or earlier, as the decline needs to be at 43% by 2030 to be on track.

Action taken to limit emissions in the next decade is critical to the future, which is why net zero is on the agenda of every country, sector, and industry.

Is net zero the same as carbon neutral?

The answer to this is no, although 'net zero' and 'carbon neutral' are often referred to interchangeably, and both result in CO2 being removed from the environment.

‘Carbon neutral’ is often used by businesses to refer to their ambition to limit any increase in future carbon emissions, using offsets to neutralise existing emissions.

‘Net zero’ focuses on reducing carbon emissions as much as possible first, only offsetting unavoidable, residual CO2 as a last resort.
