It’s official! Motorists are driving further in electric vehicles than petrol cars

Are you thinking of going electric, but you’re left wondering about the range and longevity of EVs? Well, let us help to ease your mind, because it’s official! Motorists are driving further in EVs every year than drivers of petrol cars. That’s according to new data from Solera cap hpi.
In January 2025, the average EV covered 8,740 miles annually, compared with 8,296 miles for petrol cars – and since 2023, the mileage lead for EVs has grown every month. There are number of reasons being cited for the shift:
- The expanding variety of EV models
- Improved EV technology
- Better range
- The growth in EV charging public and home infrastructure

Dylan Setterfield, Head of Forecast Strategy at Solera cap hpi, said:
“Our data reveals that people in the UK are driving increasingly fewer miles now than they were 10 years ago. It also shows that EV motorists now travel further in their cars than drivers of petrol cars and have been doing so consistently for almost two years.
By generating average mileage data such as this for the whole of the UK, Solera cap hpi is helping motorists to get the full picture of how car use is changing in line with advancing technology, rising fuel costs, growing environmental awareness and how we have generally become less reliant on cars. The data indicates that the changes in driving habits are likely to be long-lasting, reflecting that people’s day-to-day lives now involve less driving than they used to.”
Our Head of EV Charging Graeme Patton commented:
“Having data like this really helps to alleviate some of the EV myths out there around those longer journeys – yes there is a bit more planning involved when driving an EV especially as we start to think about the holidays, but the reality is that the average distance travelled by car is coming down, and with the public charging infrastructure deployment numbers continually improving, range anxiety is fast becoming a thing of the past”.
That’s right… and as EV drivers seem to agree, the more miles the merrier!
