It’s good news when it comes to EV numbers on Britain’s roads. According to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Motorparc report for 2024, a 34.6% increase in the number of plug-in vehicles over the course of 2024 means that 1 in 20 of all vehicles on the road are electric.
The annual Motorparc report covers all vehicles registered for use on roads in the UK and is compiled from DVLA data. Published this week, the data shows that the number of battery electric cars has risen 38.9% year on year to 1,334,246 units, exceeding the one million landmark.
Motorparc highlights
The report highlights:
- Of the 41,964,268 vehicles on Britain’s roads, 2,157,360 are either Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).
- BEV cars was the fastest growing sector during 2024, totalling 3.7% of cars in use
- Almost 6 in 10 EVs are registered to companies
- Average car fleet CO2 emissions are down by 1.6% as we see an ever-expanding EV model choice and lower-emission hybrids
- Zero-emission buses increased by 81.8% in 2024 compared to the previous year. This means the total number of zero-emission buses fell just short of one in 20 (4.9%).
- Vans are increasingly becoming zero-emission, with battery electric van volumes rising to 80,476 units… that’s 1.6% of all vans on the road.
Reaction
Our head of EV Charging, Graeme Patton, had this to say about the data:
“It’s great to see these positive numbers coming through in the Motorparc 2024 report, especially as BEV cars are the fastest growing sector. We need to encourage further growth and support the switch to electric by making sure the right infrastructure is in the right location, and by continuing to make sure factual information about electric vehicles is widespread”.
