Thinking of switching to an electric vehicle? Maybe you’re a landowner or business considering putting in EV charge points for customers or visitors to use? Well, the latest figures from Zapmap could help you make up your mind. They show that the demand for EV’s is continuing to rise rapidly, whilst demand for petrol and diesel cars continues to decline.
Electric vehicle sales - the facts and figures
At the end of 2021, there were 396,945 electric cars on the roads – just 1.2% of all cars. Since then, the number of electric cars has increased by over three-fold, and there’s been a positive start to 2025. Zapmap reports that 30.3% of all new vehicles registered are fully electric or plug-in hybrids, with 29,634 new, fully electric cars (BEV’s) sold in January alone. This equates to a 21.3% market share of all new cars registered so far this year.
When it comes to electric vehicle sales, if you’re considering the switch you’re in good company. In 2024, more fully electric cars were sold than any other - 21% more than in 2023. Plus, the milestone of over 1 million electric vehicles on UK roads was reached last year.

Electric vehicle sales - the rising demand
Many drivers are recognising the environmental benefits, reduced running costs, reduced maintenance costs (due to fewer moving parts), and that modern electric car batteries are built to last. As The Electric Car Scheme reports, batteries typically maintain strong performance for up to 20 years or 186,000 miles. Manufacturers typically provide comprehensive battery warranties too, usually covering 8 years or 100,000 miles.
The demand for electric vehicles is also rising due to the impact of the ZEV mandate. This sets a target, as a percentage, of vehicle manufacturer's total annual sales to transition to zero tailpipe emissions.
